Urinary tract cancer

Detected early, urologic cancer has a high chance of being controlled. The key is not to ignore the warning signs and to get an accurate diagnosis.

Signs and symptoms

  • Blood in the urine, even once and without pain
  • Elevated PSA
  • Persistent pain in the side
  • A mass found on an imaging study
  • Unexplained weight loss

When to see a doctor

Any episode of blood in the urine should be investigated, as should a lesion in the kidney or bladder found on a routine study.

Diagnosis

Imaging (ultrasound, CT or MRI), cystoscopy to examine the bladder, markers and, when required, biopsy.

Treatment

The plan depends on the organ affected and the stage. It is decided individually and, when needed, together with oncology.

  • 01Endoscopic resection of bladder tumors
  • 02Laparoscopic kidney and prostate surgery
  • 03Active surveillance in selected cases
  • 04Coordination with medical and radiation oncology

Frequently asked questions

Is blood in the urine always cancer?

No. It can be caused by infections or stones, among other things. But it should always be investigated to rule cancer out.

What is active surveillance?

For some low-risk prostate cancers, instead of treating right away, the cancer is monitored closely and treated only if it progresses.
