Genital warts

Genital warts, also called condylomas, are caused by HPV. They are benign, but they should be treated to prevent growth and spread.

Signs and symptoms

  • Small raised lesions, skin-colored or darker
  • Single lesions or cauliflower-like clusters
  • Local itching or discomfort

When to see a doctor

As soon as any lesion appears in the genital area, to confirm the diagnosis.

Diagnosis

A clinical examination is usually enough. In unclear cases, a biopsy is done.

Treatment

There are topical treatments and in-office procedures to remove the lesions, with follow-up to watch for recurrence.

Frequently asked questions

Can they come back?

Yes, they can reappear because the virus may remain in the skin. Follow-up allows them to be treated early.
