Prostate disease
The prostate changes with age. Benign enlargement is very common after 50 and can affect your sleep and quality of life, but it can be treated effectively.
Signs and symptoms
- Weak or interrupted urine stream
- Getting up several times at night to urinate
- Urgency or difficulty starting to urinate
- Feeling that the bladder does not fully empty
- Pelvic pain or pain when urinating (prostatitis)
When to see a doctor
If you have any of these symptoms, or are over 45 (40 with a family history of prostate cancer), a yearly check-up is recommended.
Diagnosis
Physical examination, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), urinalysis and urologic ultrasound, which we perform in the office. Some cases need uroflowmetry or an MRI.
Treatment
Depending on the cause and severity: lifestyle changes, medication or surgery. When benign enlargement does not respond to medication, HoLEP offers a lasting solution with no incisions.
- 01Medication to relax or shrink the prostate
- 02Prostatitis treatment
- 03Holmium laser surgery (HoLEP)
Frequently asked questions
Is an enlarged prostate cancer?
No. Benign prostate enlargement is not cancer and does not turn into cancer, although both can coexist. That is why a complete evaluation matters.
How often should I get checked?
Usually once a year from age 45, or from 40 if there is a family history.
